With this major update, the new comprehensive 2026 Franklin Historic Preservation Plan covers a broad spectrum of preservation priorities and identifies strategies that will sustain Franklin’s heritage for generations to come. A Historic City Thriving with Modern Growth Franklin, Tennessee, is a unique blend of history and new growth. Located about 15 miles south of Nashville, it was founded in 1799 and named after Benjamin Franklin. One of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War took place here, bringing thousands of visitors each year to visit the site of the Battle of Franklin, Carnton, the Carter House, and many other historic sites throughout the city. For almost fifty years, Franklin’s historic downtown has led the way nationally in revitalization with resounding success in its resurgence.
