Use elements of existing civic architecture as design inspiration 4. Restore the broken geometry of the historic Public Square COMPLETING THE SQUARE WITH A CIVIC PRESENCE 1. Incorporate a plaza to promote citizen interaction and support community functions. Potential Design Elements: • Speak to the Historic Context of the Site - Historically, this quadrant of the Square has been a place where the community would gather. • Name Recognition Wall • Outdoor Seating/Gathering/Room • Hardscape/Landscape Treatment • Water Feature • Grade Transition • Transition of Interior to Exterior Space • Celebratory Entrance • Public Art 2. Respectfully address the existing County Courthouse’s Civic and Historic Presence on the Square. • Align the front wall of the new City Hall building with front wall of the Williamson County Courthouse • Building height should be between the Courthouse eave and roof ridge. • Potentially step the building height down at the corner 3. Use Elements of Existing Civic Architecture as design inspiration • The Courthouse is Greek Revival in style. It’s portico has four thirty-foot tall Doric columns made of iron forged at the Caney Fork furnace. City Hall should incorporate elements of Civic architecture such as a colonnade and portico to set the building apart from the Main Street vernacular without competing with the iconic Historic Courthouse. 4. Restore the broken geometry of the Square. Redefine the historic line of the square in relation to the 231 Public Square building and the plaza in front of the Historic Courthouse. 5. BringCityHall’sCivicPresenceback toFranklin’sHistoricPublic Square. Historically, City Hall had its entrance on Public Square in the Northeast quadrant. The City Offices sign is still present on the existing building today. It is important to reestablish the entrance to City Hall on the Historic Public Square. OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, & GOALS
