DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 118 Site & Setting Landscape & Topography Landscape & Topography Landscape • Seek to preserve existing trees. • Place new trees in locations that will not cause damage to the historic fabric or block pedestrian areas. • Maintain original and historic landscape features and configurations. • Landscape driveways and parking areas to mitigate their impact on the historic district. • Use native non-invasive plants in landscaping as much as possible. • Regularly maintain landscaping so as not to conceal or obscure the front facade. • Avoid the use of large pavers or boulders, asphalt, or other impervious surfaces where they were not located historically. • For residential buildings, provide a landscaped front yard and minimized paved or hardscape areas. Do not fully remove and replace traditional lawn areas with hardscape. Topography • Avoid significantly altering or grading the topography of a property. • Match the historic topography of adjacent lots prevalent along the block face for new construction.
