DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 142 Signs Specific Sign Guidelines Description A sign that is attached to the front face of a canopy attached to a building Appropriate Building Types Commercial and Civic Quantity Maximum of one sign per canopy per building façade and may be used only if no wall, band, or awning sign exists on the building facade Sign Area Maximum of 90 percent of the canopy face or 120 square feet, whichever is smaller Placement Shall not project above or below the canopy or be located above the building roofline Projection Maximum of one foot from the canopy face Materials Metal, with a matte background finish rather than reflective or shiny background finish Color Maximum of 3 colors, and with a darker background color than the lettering color Use muted colors that complement the façade, although vibrant colors may be considered as an accent Illumination Use only external illumination and downlights, not uplights or spotlights Use concealed lighting or limited visible light fixtures, such as gooseneck fixtures, in a dark bronze or black color or a color that matches the façade color Use incandescent and warm-colored lighting when possible Canopy Sign
