This can be especially pronounced in bricks, as sandblasting removes the exterior hard patina and exposes the soft inner core. Never use sandblasting or other abrasive cleaning methods on masonry surfaces. • When repointing is needed, use mortar to match the original in composition and appearance. • Rake mortar joints to match the original profile. • Avoid stucco or Exterior Insulating Finishing Systems (EIFS) materials. Stucco may be an exception for rear elevations that are in poor condition or for walls that have been severely damaged by sandblasting. Alternative Materials • Alternative materials may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Factors of consideration include potential impact on historic significance, durability, accuracy of appearance, location, environmental impacts, and interaction with historic building materials.
