DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 45 chapter 2 Placement and Orientation • Design alterations and additions to respect the original orientation of the building and maintain the typical orientation of adjacent historic buildings. • Design additions to a non-historic building to preserve setback distances and spacing between buildings to maintain those typical of surrounding historic buildings. • Design doors and doorways to an addition to read as secondary in appearance and detailing to the historic building. • New garages should be detached accessory structures or appear to be detached accessory structures from the street. Place garages in traditional locations behind the rear plane of the main form of the house or as otherwise not be visible from the street.
