DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 65 chapter 3 Preservation Considerations • Preserve and maintain historic architectural features, both structural and decorative, that contribute to a building’s historic character. • When restoring a building, use photographic evidence wherever possible. Placement and Orientation • Preserve the placement and orientation of a historic building within its setting and context. Building Form • Maintain the historic building shape, mass, scale, proportion, rhythm, and roof shapes. • Preserve historic building elements that contribute to building style and historic character. • Honor the building’s period of significance by keeping any alterations true to its architectural period of significance as well as those which have gained significance over time. Avoid alterations that make a building appear older or younger than it is.
