DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 72 Commercial buildings Historic Commercial Buildings • Design awnings to have between a 30- and 50-degree angle, taking into consideration the height of the storefront and snow/wind load requirements. • Keep a minimum of eight feet between the lowest point of the awning and the sidewalk or ground below, per Building Code. 1 Awnings should have a 30-50 degree angle 2 Use shed awnings with open ends 1 2 Canopies • Preserve and maintain historic canopies. • Avoid adding canopies to historic buildings where they did not exist historically. Where deemed appropriate on rear or secondary facades with minimal visibility from the street, size and place new canopies in locations that respect the design of the building and do not obscure architectural features or detailing. Canopies should be proportional with and complimentary to nearby buildings and canopies. • Design new canopies simply to match historic equivalents and paint them muted colors that are complementary to the building and surrounding
