DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 83 chapter 3 • Select a window light pattern that is compatible with the building’s age and architectural style. • Add shutters only when compatible with the building’s architectural style. • Design new and replacement wood shutters that appear operable and fit the reveal of the window precisely. Awnings • See Historic Commercial Buildings for guidance on the use of awnings. Chimneys • Where considered appropriate, design chimneys to be compatible in materials and detailing, but simpler and subordinate in massing and height to historic chimneys in the district. • Use stone, brick, or brick veneer materials. Gutters and Downspouts • Use half-round gutters if the building architectural style is reflective of dates before 1940. • Use ogee gutters if the building architectural styles is reflective of dates 1940 or later.
