Franklin Historic District Design Guidelines
DRAFT FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 91 chapter 3 • Design windows to match the historic materials found on nearby buildings, but composite materials that have the appearance of wood are appropriate for windows, stops, jambs, and trim. • Recess window openings on masonry buildings and use window openings with raised surrounds on frame buildings. • Avoid reflective or opaque treatments. • Determine if shutters are compatible with the building’s architectural style. If so, use wood shutters that appear operable and fit the reveal of the window precisely. Awnings and Canopies • Design awnings in accordance with the guidance for Historic Commercial Buildings. • Size and place new canopies in locations that respect the design of the building. Canopies should be proportional with and complementary to nearby buildings and canopies. • Design new canopies simply to match historic equivalents and paint them muted colors that are complementary to the building and surrounding historic district. • Keep a minimum of eight feet between the lowest point of the canopy and the sidewalk or ground below, per Building Code.
