Franklin Historic District Design Guidelines

FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 138 Signs General Sign Guidelines Guidelines Applicable to All Signs • Design signs to respect and respond to the character of the property on which they are being placed and of the overall district. • Select locations, sizes, and placement of signs to complement the building and other buildings within the district. • Use traditional sign placement to enhance architectural elements of the facade. • Avoid concealing or disturbing original decorative designs, detailing, windows, or transom glass. • Place painted or applied signs on a flat surface of the building. • Attach signs to the building carefully to prevent damage to the historic fabric. For example, install any mounting bolts through mortar joints rather than the face of the masonry. • Use sign materials that are compatible with the facade and the district. High-quality materials that achieve the appearance of historic sign materials may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Avoid neon, plastic, plywood, unfinished wood, or faux embossed woodgrain for sign, bracket, trim, post, or hanging materials. General Sign Guidelines
