FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 160 Signs Specific Sign Guidelines Description A vertically-oriented sign that projects from a commercial/ mixed-use building that is 2 or more stories and fronts a street intersection Appropriate Building Types Commercial Quantity Maximum of 1 per building frontage on a street intersection and may be used only if no other hanging signs exist on the ground floor retail storefront/tenant space below Sign Area Maximum of 30 square feet or 1 square foot per linear foot of building facade, whichever is less Sign Thickness Minimum thickness of 1/2 inch and maximum thickness of 1 foot Placement At the corner of the building or at a change in massing near the corner of the building Shall not project below the window header of the first floor Projection From Wall Projects from the building facade at a 90-degree angle or at a 45-degree angle when placed at a corner of a building Maximum projection of 3.5 feet from the building facade, including a bracket depth of between 1 to 1.5 feet Materials Metal, with matte background finishes rather than reflective or shiny background finishes Color Maximum of 3 colors, and with a darker background color than the lettering color Use muted colors that complement the facade, although vibrant colors may be considered as an accent Illumination Useonlyexternal illuminationanddownlights, nospotlights Use concealed lighting or limited visible light fixtures, such as gooseneck fixtures, in a dark bronze or black color or a color that matches the facade color Use incandescent and warm-colored lighting when possible Vertical Blade Sign
