Franklin Historic District Design Guidelines

FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 174 Modern Features Solar Installation Solar Installation Solar Installation on Rooftops • Position solar panels only on the roof of the building. Position them behind existing architectural features, such as parapets, dormers, and chimneys so they are not visible from the street. • Install low-profile solar panels on flat roofs with a setback from the roof edge to minimize visibility. • Install flat panels flush with the roof. Do not alter the slope of the roof. Installation of panels must be reversible and not damage the historic integrity of the resource and district. • Use solar panels and mounting systems that are compatible in color to the property’s roof materials. Mechanical equipment associated with the photovoltaic system should be as unobtrusive as possible. • Integrate solar panels into the initial building design, when possible, to assure cohesion of design within a historic context.
