FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 186 Franklin’s Historic Resources Brief History of Franklin Since 1960, Williamson County has been one of the fastest growing counties in the state. The completion of Interstates 65 and 40 through the county and the growth of nearby Metropolitan Nashville has resulted in significant growth in Franklin, in both geographic size and population. Between 1990 and 2020, the population of Franklin increased by approximately 20,000 people per decade. Franklin has become a center for corporate headquarters. By 2020, the population of Franklin was estimated at 83,000 across approximately 43 square miles. Despite Franklin's rapid growth and development in recent years, much of the historic and architectural character of the community remains intact. Franklin is recognized as possessing one of the largest and finest collections of historic architecture in Middle Tennessee. National Register districts include the (Downtown) Franklin Historic District, which was listed in 1973, the Hincheyville Historic District, listed in 1982, and the Lewisburg Avenue Historic District, listed in 1987, the Adams Street Historic District, listed in 2000, and the Natchez Street Historic District, listed in 2004.
