EFFECTIVE MAY 30, 2022 209 chapter 11 Carnton Carnton is located off Lewisburg Avenue on Confederate Cemetery Lane. Randall McGavock established Carnton in 1825. At the center of a grove was the house, built initially with Federal and Georgian influences and later including Greek Revival additions. The property became a major hospital site following the 1864 Battle of Franklin. Following the battle, the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, now the largest private military cemetery in the country, was established on its acreage. Carothers House The John Henry Carothers House is located at 1343 Huffines Ridge. This house was constructed using local limestone by John Henry and his son, Ezeal Carothers, in 1937 after the African American family purchased the farmstead in 1934. The vernacular house remained in the family until the early 2010s and represents African American culture and history in Williamson County.
