FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 210 Franklin’s Historic Resources Local Landmarks Rural Plains “Rural Plains” is a simple Federal style farmhouse located at 244 Old Peytonsville Rd. A one-and-a-half story residence, it consists of brick and features a Greek Revival style portico on the front facade. The residence was constructed by William “Buck” Martin in 1830, after serving in the state legislature and being commissioned as Brigadier General of the 9th Brigade Tennessee State Militia. Situated within a mile of the old Lewisburg Turnpike, “Rural Plains” witnessed a major skirmish between Col. James W. Starnes, his accompanying “Freeman’s Battery”, and the 4th U.S. Cavalry. Carter House The Carter House is located at 1140 Columbia Pike. This property was the Federal headquarters and also the site where Confederate forces briefly broke through Federal lines during the 1864 Battle of Franklin. Remaining on the farm are the Classical Revival brick home of the Carter family, a smoke house, and the plantation office.
