Franklin Historic District Design Guidelines

EFFECTIVE MAY 30, 2022 29 chapter 2 Details & Ornamentation • Preserve and maintain historical architectural details and ornamentation. New architectural features should not be added. • Preserve historic, atypical-style buildings and architectural details. Do not historicize a building to mimic a different period of significance. Avoid alterations that mix elements of different architectural styles or periods. • Preserve and maintain original light fixtures on pre-1960 buildings. If new lights are needed, use simple fixtures that are appropriate to the scale and period of the house and constructed of historically prevalent materials. New fixtures should be placed in traditional locations. Entrances Doors and Doorways • Preserve and maintain original entrance locations and elements, such as original doors, transoms, sidelights, and surrounds. Leave unpainted doors unpainted. • Avoid replacing original doors unless significant deterioration is demonstrated. If removed, save original doors in case replacement is desired by later owners.
