FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 52 Residential Buildings New Residential Buildings This Section provides guidelines for the construction of new residential buildings within Franklin’s historic districts. These guidelines relate to the fundamental relationships of a building to its context, such as mass, scale, and form. New buildings should be compatible with nearby historic buildings while conveying the stylistic trends of today. New buildings should be designed to reinforce the basic visual characteristics of the district. In special cases where the replication of a significant historic building is desired on its original site, only those clearly documented through plans, photographic evidence, or other documentation may be considered. In these cases, historic markers or other signage should display the historical significance of the site and building.
