FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT DESIGN GUIDELINES 56 Residential Buildings New Residential Buildings Roofs • Design roof shape, height, pitch, and overall complexity to be compatible with those on adjacent historic buildings. • Design the roof pitch to be compatible with the architectural style of the building. • Design eaves to be at least eight inches. Porches, Stoops, Decks, & Porte Cocheres • Include a front porch or stoop as part of a new residential building, except for specific historically-accurate Federal style architecture. • Design porches and stoops to continue the rhythm of these elements on a street. • When designing a porch or stoop, consider the location, proportion, height, roof form, supports, steps, and ornamentation relative to historic porches or stoops in the district. • Design porches with depths of at least six feet. Design stoops with depths of at least three feet. • Use simple columns and balusters. Use square or round columns with a minimum of eight inches and a maximum of 12 inches in diameter. Avoid ornate milled columns, variations of Greek orders, or Craftsman style columns on porches. • Use wood porch elements. Brick or metal may be considered if appropriate to the architectural style of the building. • Design rear or side porches to be subordinate in character to the front porch. • Design decks to rear or side facades with minimal visibility and use designs, materials, and scale in keeping with building character.
