Alternative Materials • Alternative materials may be considered for use on a case-by-case basis. Considerations include the potential impact on historic significance, durability, accuracy of appearance, location, environmental impacts, and interaction with historic building materials. Details & Ornamentation • Preserve, maintain, and repair original details and ornamentation on historic commercial buildings. • If replacement is required, design details or ornamentation elements to be compatible with the historic building and the district. Maintain the established spatial relationships and scale of existing details. • Avoid adding architectural features if they did not exist historically. • Where a detail has been removed, use photographic evidence or “ghosts” of the detail to recreate it. Where exact reconstruction is not possible, use a simplified interpretation of the original design detail that maintains the scale and character of original or similar detailing used on buildings of the same period. • New cornices, if appropriate, should have similar dimensions as the original or as commonly found on buildings of similar age and size and scale. Entrances • Preserve and maintain storefronts, doors, and doorways on historic commercial buildings in their original location and configuration. • Avoid removing or replacing original architectural features or detailing unless extensive deterioration is evident. If a new door is required, use a wooden single-light door traditionally found in a historic storefront. • Use the historic design in entrance rehabilitation if evidence is available, such as historic photographs or
