Franklin Historic District Design Guidelines

EFFECTIVE MAY 30, 2022 81 chapter 3 Placement & Orientation • Design alterations and additions to respect the original orientation of the building and maintain the typical orientation of adjacent historic buildings. • Design additions to a non-historic building to preserve setback distances and spacing between buildings to maintain those typical of surrounding historic buildings. • Design doors and doorways to an addition to read as secondary in appearance and detailing to the historic building. Building Form • Design the massing and scale to be consistent with the massing and scale of surrounding historic buildings. • Design a roofline and roof shape of an addition to a non-historic commercial building to be in keeping with the scale of surrounding historic buildings. • Design a cornice line, foundation line, window and door height, and floor and ceiling height of an addition to a non-historic building to be similar to those of the original building provided these elements on the original building blend harmoniously with the historic district. • Use the alteration or addition to a nonhistoric building to improve the overall structure’s appropriateness within the historic district. Foundations • Design a foundation to be consistent with the materials, height, and detailing of the historic commercial buildings in the district.
